FAN ART A GO-GO

With over 40 years in graphic design I’ve had so many memorable experiences with various clients and assignments. To artistically communicate specific concepts that catch consumers attention was a daily adventure. Moving into a full-time illustration role has just the same opportunities to tell new stories and develop new skills.

Commercial fan art is more than simply visuals of movies franchises, it explores sports, music, branding, & pop culture. In that spectrum of creation, you have the ability to write your own stories and develop situations that explore known characters in a unique visual way. You can build new narratives that challenge old thoughts and rock, solid institutions... that can some serious fun.

I always wanted to create art that promotes engagement with people’s passions. I want them to get lost in a specific world that they delight in and they can communicate back to me their thoughts. If I get energetic feedback about their point of view it helps hone my approach next time around. When I was illustrating my book, “Beauty of Bond: Celebrating 60 years the 007 women”, I wanted to balance sexuality with a solid tribute to a history of amazing actresses and entertainers.

Lana Wood, a Bond girl in 1971 said, “that the art is more than simply beautiful, it has depth and expression... I can see thought and personality in all of the images.” Thanks Lana! Sometimes the subject of the art is a fan as well.

THE CAGE 6/25/2024

Before Scotty and Sulu; before McCoy; before even Capt. Kirk was Captain Pike. Who? Produced in November of 1964, the original pilot for Star Trek was titled “The Cage”. It preceded the most influential series in television history by a good two years. The pilot was unaired in 1965 and later sliced and diced and made into a 2-part episode “The Menagerie” that aired in November 1966. The Cage, was rejected by NBC for being "too cerebral".

The captain of the Enterprise is Jeffrey Hunter, Leonard Nimoy is present as SPOCK with some deadly, devilish eyebrows. Majel Barrett-Roddenberry is Number One but participated in just about every incarnation of the franchise until her death in 2008.

This art commemorates the 60th anniversary of Desilu Productions and Lucille Ball’s first stab at traveling to the galaxy’s edge, eyebrows and all.

IN PRINT

2024 marks the anniversary of the film that changed action cinema forever. HAPPY 60th GOLDFINGER. This illustration features Sean Connery in the title roll of agent James Bond. His tenor of Bond created a style and influence that few actors can match to this day. A good friend told me that this film taught him a valuable lesson that still resonates with me to this day: “A martini is shaken, never stirred.”
